Two petrol price structures from 1 May

PETALING JAYA: There will be two price structures for petrol from May 1 -- one for Malaysians and another for foreigners -- Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said on Thursday. For Malaysians, the price of petrol will also be based on engine capacity, which means that not all would be entitled to subsidised fuel, he added. Different petrol prices would be introduced for different groups of Malaysians, Ismail told a press conference here on Thursday after launching the new corporate identity of the F&N Soft Drinks Division. Amongst the things that would be considered are the engine capacity of vehicles and socio-economic factors, he said. He said that the subsidy for petrol would be retained but only targeted groups would receive the subsidy. "The categories will then be divided into sub-categories such as the engine capacity of the vehicles used and other factors such as socio-economy," he said. "For RON95 petrol,

AirAsia and Jetstar form alliance

MELBOURNE: AirAsia says its alliance with Qantas Airways' subsidiary, Jetstar, could potentially generate costsavings worth hundreds of millions of dollars and result in lower fares. Under the alliance formed in Sydney Wednesday, Jetstar and AirAsia would explore opportunities to jointly procure next generation narrowbody aircraft, cooperate in passenger handling in Australia and Asia, pool aircraft components and spare parts and jointly acquire engineering and maintenance supplies and services. The airlines said the alliance would reduce costs, pool expertise and result in cheaper fares. AirAsia Group Chief Executive Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said the alliance showed lowcost carriers could work together to stimulate the market and to operate on lower fares. "The key thrust is to increase our efficiency and find ways of getting even lower fares. From this I believe we will then move into revenue ideas and we've already got a few that we've been discussing," Fernan

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) expected ready in 2012

I applauded the effort made to improve public transportation and thus the ridership. Looking forward to the Puchong Utama route. Hope it's implemented by end 2012. First BRT system expected to be implemented by 2012. Meena L. Ramadas. PETALING JAYA (Dec 30, 2009) : The Transport Ministry expects to launch Malaysia's first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, using an exclusive bus lane, in the second quarter of 2011. The initial route -- the first of three "corridors" -- will be from Jalan Cheras to Pasar Seni. Mohamad Nur Kamal, a special transport adviser with the ministry, said today the BRT will increase integration with the light rail transit (LRT) system. He said the ministry is pushing for a detailed engineering study to be commissioned on the feasibility of the BRT as many major roads cannot accommodate an additional bus lane. "The study will take six to eight months to be completed and then a proposal will be handed to the government for approval on the

Good news: No visa required for traveling to UK

Envoy: Malaysia in no danger of losing visa-free status in Britain KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's visa-free status with Britain is under no threat of being revoked, according to the British High Commission. Revealing the good news, High Commissioner Boyd McCleary said any such notion was misleading. He said Britain's visa-free status with Malaysia had already been reviewed and the outcome was to have it maintained pending any future review. McCleary was responding to news reports that Malaysia was set to be included in the list of countries whose citizens required visas to enter Britain. Malaysian Deputy High Commissioner to Britain Datuk Rustam Yahaya was quoted as saying that the number of Malaysian overstayers had reached a "critical" level following a recent situation update by the British Home Office. He said based on the current trend, British authorities were likely to impose visa requirements on Malaysians travelling to Britain. Malaysia was in a group

Maxis testing HSPA+, a higher speed broadband service

Can Maxis do something on the current wireless broadband service first? The speed is a big letdown. KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Bhd has deployed High-Speed Packet Access+ (HSPA+) technology to enhance its wireless broadband services. The incorporation of this data transmission capability into Maxis' existing 3G network will enable subscribers surfing the Internet in selected areas in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru to experience significant improvement in download speeds, it said. Mark Dioguardi, Maxis executive vice-president and head of network and technology, said HSPA+ technology will make browsing the Internet, video-streaming, as well as the uploading and downloading of high-resolution files, enjoyable and seamless to service subscribers. The new technology is available now to select users on a trial basis, and following new announcements, will become widely available to Maxis customers during 2010. With HSPA+, Maxis claims its wireless broadband network can support peak rated netw
