South Korea reports 14 more MERS cases, fifth death

Why was South Korea being too slow in  containing MERS? SEOUL: South Korean health officials on Sunday reported 14 more cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, bringing the total in the country's outbreak to 64, and said a fifth person infected with the virus had died. South Korea's outbreak of the often-deadly MERS virus, first reported on May 20, is the largest outside the Middle East, prompting public fear and questions over the government's initial response. The patient who died was a 75-year-old man who had been in the same Seoul hospital emergency room where a total of 17 people, including two medical staff, are believed to have been infected with MERS, South Korea's health ministry said. Of the 14 new cases, 10 were at the same Seoul hospital. All of the confirmed South Korean infections have taken place in healthcare facilities, officials have said. Malaysia fuel prices hiked by 10 Malaysian cents

RON 95 will rise to 2.05 ringgit per litre in June, up from 1.95 ringgit in May, while RON 97 will rise to 2.35 ringgit per litre (inclusive of the six per cent Goods and Services Tax), up from 2.25 ringgit. MAS sends out termination letters to 20,000 staff

Good as MAS finally begins its revamp exercise. Bad as Khazanah has to pump in money (tax payers' money) and some one third of the 20,000 employees are losing their jobs. KUALA LUMPUR: Termination letters from Malaysia's loss-making national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) are expected to begin arriving at the homes of around 20,000 staff from Monday (Jun 1) onwards. As part of its restructure, MAS is letting go all of its staff - but two-thirds are expected to receive offer letters to the airline's new incarnation, set to begin operations in September. Sources tell Channel NewsAsia that some staff have already received their termination and offer letters, but not all have been offered the same position that they held previously in the company. This overhaul of MAS comes as new CEO Christoph Mueller attempts to bring the airline back to profitability within three years.
