High-speed broadband in Klang Valley

High-speed broadband in Klang Valley beginning this month KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysians, currently among the biggest users of Yahoo!, Friendster, Facebook and blogs in Asia, can look forward to more high definition applications with the roll-out of high-speed broadband (HSBB) in the Klang Valley beginning this month. Twenty-seven areas in the Klang Valley will be equipped with the HSBB within two years, with initial roll-out in Bangsar, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya which are considered as the areas with highest Internet usage in the country. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Tan Sri Khalid Ramli said the HSBB, to be rolled out by Telekom Malaysia, is expected to have a speed more than 10 megabits per second (Mbps). While the existing 2Mbps allowed users to surf the Internet and use facilities like e-mail and YouTube, the bigger bandwidth would enable them to watch IPTV and HDTV, and gain access to advanced educ...

Maxis testing HSPA+, a higher speed broadband service

Can Maxis do something on the current wireless broadband service first? The speed is a big letdown. KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Bhd has deployed High-Speed Packet Access+ (HSPA+) technology to enhance its wireless broadband services. The incorporation of this data transmission capability into Maxis' existing 3G network will enable subscribers surfing the Internet in selected areas in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru to experience significant improvement in download speeds, it said. Mark Dioguardi, Maxis executive vice-president and head of network and technology, said HSPA+ technology will make browsing the Internet, video-streaming, as well as the uploading and downloading of high-resolution files, enjoyable and seamless to service subscribers. The new technology is available now to select users on a trial basis, and following new announcements, will become widely available to Maxis customers during 2010. With HSPA+, Maxis claims its wireless broadband network can support peak rated netw...

A woman loss her insurance benefits just because of Facebook

Moral of the story: careful on what you post on Facebook! Canada woman to fight insurance company over Facebook MONTREAL: A Canadian woman on sick leave for depression says she will fight an insurance company's decision to cut her benefits after her agent found photos on Facebook of her vacationing, at a bar and at a party. Nathalie Blanchard said Monday she was diagnosed with major depression and was receiving monthly sick-leave benefits until payments dried up this fall. When Blanchard called her insurance provider, Manulife, to find out why, she says she was told the Facebook photos showed she was able to work. "If you have insurance, be careful. This is a major battle and it's not going to be easy," Blanchard, 29, said in a telephone interview from her home in Bromont Quebec. She said her insurance agent described several pictures Blanchard posted on Facebook, including ones showing her having a good time at a Chippendales bar show, at her birthday party a...

Skype lawsuit against eBay

The founders of Skype filed a lawsuit against EBay Inc. today, a step that could spoil EBay's $2-billion deal to sell a controlling stake in the Internet phone company to a group of private investors. The suit, filed in a Delaware court, was brought by Joltid Ltd. and Joost N.V., which are owned by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis . The lawsuit contends that former Joost chief executive Michelangelo Volpi used confidential information to sell a 65% stake in Skype to a private equity consortium. The deal was announced by EBay about two weeks ago. Volpi recently became a partner at Index Ventures Management S.A., one of the investors buying a majority stake in Skype. The lawsuit alleges that Volpi leaked Joost's company secrets and accuses him of "civil conspiracy." Volpi had a fiduciary duty to protect the information, the lawsuit charges, and not "use it for his own benefit." Index Ventures is also listed as a defendant in the suit. EBay bou...

Sources told The Edge Financial Daily that employees had been informed of the decision and had until the end of the month to make their decisions on whether to take up the offer. When contacted, Dell Malaysia confirmed that under the Malaysian initiative, the VSS had been offered to all the 5,000 Malaysian staff on Penang island, Bukit Tengah in the mainland and Cyberjaya.
