Saving unwanted babies

Noble effort, I would say! Keep it up though at the same time, I don't wish to see more abandon babies. The couple or mother need to be more responsible with their acts. PETALING JAYA: A non-profit organisation has set up the country's first baby hatch for mothers to anonymously leave their unwanted newborns to be put up for adoption. The hatch has a small door which opens to an incubator bed. Once a baby is placed inside it and the door is closed, an alarm bell will alert the staff. Risnawati Yassin, 35, who had no children after being married for five years, getting her two-month-old adopted child Mohd Farid Fatah Abdullah snuggled up inside a baby hatch that was launched yesterday. The hatch, launched by OrphanCARE, is designed to reduce the incidence of abandoned babies. — NORAFIFI EHSAN / The Star Located at 6, SS1/24A, Kampung Tunku here, the hatch is run by OrphanCARE, a smart partner of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry. I feel very bad

After reading this story of Ah Fook, I feel very bad. Disabled and lonely even at CNY PETALING JAYA: Chinese New Year is a time to be with family and friends, but not for Ah Fook. The keropok seller, who suffers from speaking and motor disability, recently lost his last living relative — his father. We found him sitting on the steps in one of the buildings here with visible scabs, the result of numerous falls over the years, all over his legs. Earning a living: Ah Fook selling keropok at Sea Park, Petaling Jaya to make ends meet. "I've seen him here everyday for the past 10 years," said 61-year-old Sea Park resident Stanley. "Due to his disability, he takes almost two hours everyday to walk here from where he stays. He falls a lot in the process." Ah Fook relies mainly on the goodwill of others to get by. Several kind passers-by stopped to give him food or ang pow . "Some people think he is a drug addict, and refuse to help him or even look at him,...

The most precious gifts of life from you

I feel so touched when reading this piece of news. Personally, I'm so glad to have registered as an organ donor this year and hope when I'm gone one day, at least I still could contribute something to the needy. Kudos to those who have pledged for organ donation. For those who have not, I sincerely urge you to consider this. This could be the most precious gift of life from you. KUALA LUMPUR: As people were busy counting down to Christmas, the parents of a 17-year-old boy made a generous decision that gave what could be the best present to at least three people. The boy had been declared brain dead by doctors at Selayang Hospital after a road accident on Dec 20. The parents' decision set off a chain of events which eventually saw their son's kidneys transplanted to two young patients — a girl and a boy, both 16 — and his liver given to a three-year-old girl. The operation was carried out at the Selayang Hospital from 9pm to 5am on Christmas Day. Besides the li...

Australia also has 'Josef Fritzl'

Another tragic case. How could this man be so cruel to her daughter? In 2005, an Australian woman in her 40s gathered the bravery to approach police in the southern state of Victoria. With the encouragement of a concerned neighbor, she told the officer on duty at the Victorian police station that she had been kept a virtual prisoner by her own father for three decades. During this time, she said, he raped her repeatedly, fathering her four children, three of whom survived. Despite the gravity of her allegations, the police could not convince her to press charges. Fearing for her safety, she quietly returned to her life in the rural Latrobe Valley. The case is only coming to light now in Australia after the Herald Sun , a Melbourne daily, broke the story on Thursday. Two years after approaching the police, the victim filed a restraining order against her father, and in June 2008 she pressed charges. Seven months later, in February, the man now referred as the "Australian Josef Fritz...

Organ donation

Being able to still contribute back to the society when died one day is a good deed. And currently the National Transplant Resource Centre is still lacking number of donors. So let's do our part while we could. How to be an organ donor? http://www.agiftoflife.gov.my National Transplant Resource Centre, Ministry of Health Malaysia

Another story of adoption

Indeed very inspirational. I have to admit that I'm also a strong supporter of the adoption idea as there are just too many abandoned kids nowadays. Monday May 11, 2009 Samantha loves her ‘rainbow family’ By LOONG MENG YEE KUALA LUMPUR: When actress and former Miss Malaysia Samantha Schubert was “expecting” in 2004, she and hubby could not care less if the baby was black, white, brown or yellow – all they wanted was a girl. “We were thrilled when the Welfare Department called about a week-old baby girl up for adoption. “I fell in love immediately with this beautiful thing in my arms; who cares about her skin colour?” said Samantha of her daughter Jodie, who is of Indian parentage. Two years later, Samantha and husband Oliver Knott again adopted a baby. This time an Indian boy they named Harry. Samantha is herself an adopted child of Datuk Paddy Bowie, a business consultant and writer. Mum’s the word: Samantha playing with Jodie, Harry and Thomas. The Knotts had resided in England a...

Story of a mother with adopted children

Frankly speaking, I'm really salute her for adopting the ill children. Sunday May 10, 2009 Rosnah enjoys being with her adopted children and stepson Stories by LEE YUK PENG KUALA LUMPUR: Six years ago, a teenager sought help from a Puteri Umno division chief after giving birth to a child out of wedlock. Her baby, who was born premature, suffered from epilepsy and she could not afford to bring him to the hospital. Happy family: Rosnah posing for a photo with (from left) Siti Aishah, Siti Khatijah and Mahathir. Despite being single, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, who was then Kota Marudu Puteri Umno division chief, adopted the baby from the 14-year-old. “I love children and felt that I was ready for such a responsibility,” said Rosnah, who was 30 then. The lawyer-turned-politician from Sabah, who is now Puteri Umno chief and the Deputy Health Minister, said she fell in love with the baby at first sight and named him Mahathir Musa Abdullah. A year later, the Papar MP went on to ad...

Josef Fritzl pleaded guilty for abusing his daughter

I'm extremely disheartened to read this. It shows how inhumane a person could be. To the victim, I expressed my sympathy for all the pain and suffering she had gone through the 24 years. Daughter's evidence forces Josef Fritzl to admit: 'I'm guilty of all charges' After 24 years of abuse, father changes plea and acknowledges cruelty * Kate Connolly in St Pölten * guardian.co.uk, Wednesday 18 March 2009 22.04 GMT As he shuffled into court today without the most potent symbol of this trial, which out of shame and embarrassment he had held up to cover his face during previous sessions, he made a decision that elicited gasps from the public gallery. "I recognise that I am guilty of all the charges presented," he said. "I regret what I've done." Asked by the stunned judge, Andrea Humer, what had made him change his mind so suddenly, and prompted him to admit to the charges of murder and slavery that he had previously rejected, Fritzl said: ...
