Cancer: A need to practise healthy lifestyle

Must really practise healthy lifestyle ... Cancer to hit more women By FLORENCE A. SAMY newsdesk@thestar.com.my KUALA LUMPUR: The common types of cancer in men are those affecting the large bowel, lung, nasopharynx, prostate and liver. For women, they were prone to breast cancer, followed by large bowel, cervix, ovarian and thyroid, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai. Almost 32,000 new cancer cases were expected to be detected this year with females making up 53.7% of them, he added. Liow said the figures were based on the expected 28.9 million population for this year. “Based on the latest National Cancer Regis-try Report 2006, cancer incidence for males was 99.8 per 100,000 population and for females it was 120 per 100,000 people. “Cancer prevalence is highest among the Chinese (161 per 100,000 population), followed by Indians (93) and Malays (72),” he said yesterday before launching a book on cancer and healthy lifestyle. Exercise and diet can reduce breast cancer risk

Excercise, diet can cut breast cancer risk by 30% BARCELONA (Spain): Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a conference said, renewing a sensitive debate about how lifestyle factors affect the disease. Better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed breast cancer, but experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity. "What can be achieved with screening has been achieved. We can't do much more," Carlo La Vecchia, head of epidemiology at the University of Milan, said in an interview. "It's time to move on to other things." La Vecchia spoke Thursday at a European breast cancer conference in Barcelona. He cited figures from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which estimates that 25 to 30 percent of breast cancer cases could be avoided if women were thinner and exercise...

No more shark fin soup for me

With this awareness, I vow not to consume shark fin soup anymore. Over 100 million sharks are killed every year, a portion of which due to the demand for shark fin soup. [26] Major declines in shark populations have been recorded in recent years—some species have been depleted by over 90% over the past 20–30 years with a population decline of 70% not being unusual. [27] Only a small amount of the shark is actually kept. This is done is a process called finning where the fins of the shark is cut from living sharks. [28] After the fins have been cut off, the remainder of the fish which is often still-living, is thrown back into the sea. [28] When returned to the ocean , the finless shark is unable to swim and sinks to the ocean bottom and dies a slow death. [29] The 2007 documentary Sharkwater [30] exposes the abuse in shark-finning industry and the damage it is causing to the ocean's ecosystems. It also uncovers government corruption supporting the industry. Source: Wikipe...

World’s top 4 killer diseases

All these 4 are caused by our lifestyles and can be prevented. Let's change the way we live for the betterment of our health before it's too late. KUALA LUMPUR: Heart diseases, chronic respiratory conditions, cancer and diabetes have been named the world's top four killer diseases – more fatal than infectious illnesses like AIDS and influenza A (H1N1). United Nations University-International Institute for Global Health director Tan Sri Dr Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Yasin said such a revelation was frightening because these diseases were "highly preventable" and were due to lifestyle choices . "Such non-infectious diseases or chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs), also contribute to 60% of all deaths worldwide . "It is twice the number of the combined deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and perinatal conditions and nutritional deficiencies," he told reporters at Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. A good read on cervical cancer prevention

A long read but I found it to be very well written. Sunday November 22, 2009 Cervical cancer prevention By Dr MILTON LUM The prevention of cervical cancer has to be carried out by various measures, all of which are necessary if we are to achieve the success of many developed countries in reducing the incidence and mortality from cervical cancer. THE prevention of any disease can be primary or secondary. The former involves taking action on the determinants of the disease to prevent it from occurring. The latter involves the early detection of disease, followed by appropriate interventions to prevent its progression. There has been considerable media publicity about the prevention of cervical cancer in the past six months. Most of it has focused on the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, which has been called a cervical cancer vaccine, although there is no such vaccine available anywhere in the world. Cervical smears have resulted in a steady decline in the incidence and mortalit...

Finding remedies for severe sore throat pain

Initially I just ate lemon, supplements and fruits. But the condition getting worst. I have no choice but to consume antibiotics (Amoxyl), gargle with salt water and eat throat lozenges. I even resorted to 2 x Panadol 500 mg to reduce the pain. Along the way, I found some remedy tips here and here . The second link suggesting a gargle using a mixture of mouthwash like Listerine and hydrogen peroxide. Hmmm ... will give it a try once I manage to get hydrogen peroxide from pharmacy.

Cervical vaccination for all 13-year-old Malaysians

I applaud this move. It comes in 3 doses at RM 500, from the original price of RM 1200. KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry will provide annual HPV vaccination against cervical or cervix cancer to all 300,000 13-year-old girls in Malaysia beginning next year. It is up to the girls to take advantage of the vaccine. Currently, the vaccine costs RM1,200 for three doses per person. The Ministry hoped to negotiate with drug companies for as low as RM500 person as there would be economies of scale and others seeking the jabs in the private sector would benefit too, he said. Prevent H1N1

Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps - not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu): 1.    Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications). 2.    "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe). 3.    Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate thi...
