Prosecutors seek death penalty for Korea ferry disaster captain

GWANGJU: South Korean prosecutors on Monday (Oct 27) demanded the death penalty for the captain of the Sewol ferry that sank in April, saying he had abandoned the more than 300 people who died in the disaster. Iran hangs woman in defiance of international campaign

TEHRAN: Iran on Saturday (Oct 25) hanged a woman convicted of murdering a former intelligence officer she claimed had tried to sexually assault her, defying international appeals for a stay of execution. Reyhaneh Jabbari, 26, who had been on death row for five years, was put to death at dawn, the official IRNA news agency quoted the Tehran prosecutor's office as saying. CIMB, RHB and MBSB agreed to merge

SINGAPORE: Three Malaysian financial institutions - CIMB Group, RHB Capital Bhd and Malaysia Building Society Bhd (MBSB) - have agreed on a deal to merge, according to a source quoted in Reuters on Thursday (Oct 9). The merger deal will create the country's biggest bank. According to the Reuters report, shares of the three banks have been suspended and an announcement is expected later on Thursday. The deal will involve a share swap between CIMB, Malaysia's second largest bank, and RHB, said the source, who was not identified in the report. However, the source said the deal will still need the go-ahead from Malaysia's central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia.
