Paris Agreement 2015 to stop global warming

Relieved. I now started to realise the impact of global warming. Let's do our parts! LE BOURGET, France: Cheering envoys from 195 nations approved on Saturday (Dec 12) a historic accord in Paris to stop global warming, offering hope that humanity can avert catastrophic climate change and usher in an energy revolution. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius ended nearly a fortnight of gruelling UN negotiations with the bang of a gavel, marking consensus among the ministers, who stood for several minutes to clap and shout their joy, with some shedding tears of relief. "I see the room, I see the reaction is positive, I hear no objection. The Paris climate accord is adopted," declared Fabius, the president of the talks. Turning to a little green hammer with which he formally gave life to the arduously crafted pact, he quipped: "It may be a small gavel but it can do big things." The post- 2020 Paris Agreement ends decades-long rows between rich and poor na

Putin's 'realpolitik' aims to make Russia indispensable

A must read! "Russia has been willing and able to bring significant firepower to bear against ISIS at a time when France is willing but not entirely able, and the United States is able, but not entirely willing to bring its full firepower to bear against ISIS in Syria," said Bruno Tertrais, senior research fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/putin-s-realpolitik-aim/2290042.html

Cameron to give strongest warning over possible EU exit-media

LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron will give his strongest warning this week that he might back Britain leaving the EU unless other European leaders agree to his demands for reform of the bloc, media reported on Saturday. Cameron is due to outline British demands for renegotiation of its European Union membership terms in a letter to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, to be published on Tuesday. In a speech the same day, he will say that if no deal can be reached, he could back a British exit when an in/out referendum is held before the end of 2017 . "If we can't reach such an agreement, and if Britain's concerns were to be met with a deaf ear, which I do not believe will happen, then we will have to think again about whether this European Union is right for us," Cameron will say, according to the media reports. "As I have said before – I rule nothing out." Cameron has faced criticism both at home and abroad for not spell

Lewis Hamilton being grateful to former McLaren boss Ron Dennis

I like the way he paid tribute to his former boss. Thumbs up. SOCHI, Russia: McLaren had the vision but Mercedes have the smell of success, as far as Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is concerned. The 30-year-old, who could clinch his third world title within a matter of weeks, told British reporters at the Russian Grand Prix that he would always owe an immense debt to his former McLaren boss Ron Dennis. However, he added that current employers Mercedes felt much more like home. "Ron was amazing with me... I would not be here if this guy had not noticed me when I was 10 and actually taken notice. The majority, if not all, saw me as another kid who came along," Hamilton told reporters. "This guy has unbelievable vision. What he's created there (at McLaren) - the place is beautiful - I'm just saying as someone who loves more authentic racing teams, old school cars, I get that smell (at Mercedes). Malaysia prosecutor gives clean chit to 1MDB officials on bank report

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's attorney general said on Thursday it had reviewed the report of a central bank investigation of troubled state fund 1MDB and decided that fund officials had not committed any offence. "No further action would be taken in the matter," the Attorney General's Chambers said in a statement. The decision had been communicated to the central bank in September, it added. The state prosecutor said a request for a further review of the decision by the central bank had also been rejected as no new evidence was made available. It added that investigations by police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) - the country's anti-corruption watchdog - were not yet complete as some key witnesses' statements had yet to be recorded. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/mobile/business/international/malaysia-prosecutor-gives/2178098.html

FBI launches investigation into Malaysian state fund 1MDB: WSJ

Wow! Malaysia is making headlines again. KUALA LUMPUR: The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into allegations of money-laundering at troubled Malaysian state fund 1MDB, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday citing an unidentified source. The scope of the investigation into the debt-laden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was not clear, said the newspaper, which cited "a person familiar with the matter". Neither the FBI nor 1MDB responded to a request for comment. The reported FBI investigation comes shortly after a former member of Malaysia's ruling party was arrested just before travelling to the United States where he planned to make a police complaint and urge U.S. authorities to look into the allegations of money-laundering at 1MDB. 1MDB's advisory board is chaired by Prime Minister Najib Razak. The fund has been dogged by controversy over its US$11 billion debt and alleged financial mismanagement. A serie

Hillary Clinton used personal e-mail account for work

Interesting. WASHINGTON: Hillary Clinton had the right to delete messages from her personal e-mail account that she deemed non-work related while she was Secretary of State, the US Department of Justice said in a court filing. The filing obtained by AFP on Saturday (Sep 12) came in response to legal action filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative monitoring group that wants access to all of Clinton's e-mail while she was the top US diplomat. "There is no question that former Secretary Clinton had authority to delete personal emails without agency supervision - she appropriately could have done so even if she were working on a government server," the Justice Department wrote in a document filed this week in US District Court in Washington. Clinton, the frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic Party presidential nomination, has been dogged for months by revelations that she used a private email account and home server in lieu of the official government email system while

Zhou Xun and actor Archie Kao hold no-frills wedding

Like their approach! Last July, Chinese actress Zhou Xun surprised everyone by unexpectedly turning a charity concert into her wedding ceremony. At her benefit show One Night, which was held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, the award-winning 40-year-old film star suddenly appeared on stage in full bridal regalia. She went on to exchange vows and rings with Hollywood-based American-Taiwanese actor Archie Kao, 45, who is best known for his role as an audiovisual lab technician in US drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. In an e-mail interview with The New Paper, Zhou, the lead of movies such as Perhaps Love (2005), The Equation Of Love And Death (2008), Painted Skin (2008), The Message (2009), and The Silent War (2012), explained why the couple decided to tie the knot in such a "sudden, special way". South Korea reports 14 more MERS cases, fifth death

Why was South Korea being too slow in  containing MERS? SEOUL: South Korean health officials on Sunday reported 14 more cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, bringing the total in the country's outbreak to 64, and said a fifth person infected with the virus had died. South Korea's outbreak of the often-deadly MERS virus, first reported on May 20, is the largest outside the Middle East, prompting public fear and questions over the government's initial response. The patient who died was a 75-year-old man who had been in the same Seoul hospital emergency room where a total of 17 people, including two medical staff, are believed to have been infected with MERS, South Korea's health ministry said. Of the 14 new cases, 10 were at the same Seoul hospital. All of the confirmed South Korean infections have taken place in healthcare facilities, officials have said. First identified in humans in 2012, MERS is caused by a coronavirus from the same family as the one that trigge

MAS sends out termination letters to 20,000 staff

Good as MAS finally begins its revamp exercise. Bad as Khazanah has to pump in money (tax payers' money) and some one third of the 20,000 employees are losing their jobs. KUALA LUMPUR: Termination letters from Malaysia's loss-making national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) are expected to begin arriving at the homes of around 20,000 staff from Monday (Jun 1) onwards. As part of its restructure, MAS is letting go all of its staff - but two-thirds are expected to receive offer letters to the airline's new incarnation, set to begin operations in September. Sources tell Channel NewsAsia that some staff have already received their termination and offer letters, but not all have been offered the same position that they held previously in the company. This overhaul of MAS comes as new CEO Christoph Mueller attempts to bring the airline back to profitability within three years. The company has suffered continuous losses since 2008 despite restructuring plans and billions of dollars

True stories by human trafficking victim

So sad to hear this.  ALOR SETAR:   "There was only one thing on my mind - death. I wanted to die because dying would be easier than living," said a Rohingya migrant who managed to escape from the transit camp in Wang Kelian. Speaking exclusively to Bernama on Thursday, Nurul Amin Nobi Hussein, 25, said during the two months he was held at the transit camp in Wang Kelian last year, he lost all hope of surviving and only thought of death. "I was locked up in a cage like the goats and chickens, and all the time, I was surrounded by death. Each day, five or six of us would die, either from illness or were beaten up and shot," he said. He added that the Rohingya migrants were crammed into what could be described as small coops which housed between 200 and 300 people, with the men and women kept in separate cages. He said about five to six guards who spoke Thai would patrol round the clock, armed with sticks, knives, pistols and rifles, watching the estimated 1,500 peopl

HSBC's HQ rethink: taxes and China relationship hold key to decision

Interesting.  LONDON: In 1990, an assessment called Project Rainbow paved the way for HSBC to move from Hong Kong to Britain. As Europe's biggest bank now considers moving back, the same exercise offers clues to its final decision, say industry sources and analysts. Project Rainbow assessed HSBC's future base by considering whether it was operationally effective, tax efficient, politically acceptable, consistent with bank regulatory requirements, in the best interests of shareholders and compatible with any future merger of HSBC and the Midland Group. After HSBC said its formal review of whether to change headquarters again could take six months of complex discussions, industry observers are looking to previous decision-making criteria to try to forecast its final decision. OPERATIONALLY EFFECTIVE How easily Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver can keep his new structure intact is a major consideration, particularly after his work in the last four years to cut costs, improve profita

WHO leadership admits failings over Ebola, promises reform

GENEVA: The World Health Organization has admitted serious failings in its handling of the Ebola crisis and pledged reforms to enable it to do better next time, its leadership said in a statement seen by Reuters on Sunday. World Chefs: Vegan cookbook author extols dairy-free life

NEW YORK: Cookbook author Kristy Turner was so passionate about cheese that she worked as a professional cheese seller and server. But once she decided to go vegan, she never looked back. Turner's first book, "But I Could Never Go Vegan!", includes 125 recipes and her take on dairy-free, egg-free pizza and nachos, along with the cashew-based blue cheese and macadamia mozzarella that she says fully satisfy her cheesy cravings. "I was a huge cheese nerd. I studied cheeses, I could tell you where they were made and the animal involved, but now I don't miss it at all," said Turner, 34. The Los Angeles-based cook, who has been happily vegan for more than three years, spoke to Reuters about how and why she stopped eating meat and dairy. Q: Why did you go vegan? Malala calls for 'urgent action' to free Nigerian schoolgirl hostages

Boko Haram fighters seized 276 teenagers from the Government Girls' Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok, in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, on the evening of April 14 last year. Fifty-seven managed to escaped but 219 are still being held, despite military claims that they had been located but that a rescue operation was too fraught with danger to be conducted. The girls' abduction and subsequent claims from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau that they have been forcibly converted to Islam or married off sparked global outrage. The hashtag #BringBackOurGirls trended on social media and saw prominent figures, including US First Lady Michelle Obama, tweet their support, as well as global street protests. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/malala-calls-for-urgent/1644122.html

IS 'sentenced' US hostage to death last year: Activist

I salute for what she had done. May she still alive. WASHINGTON: The young American hostage who the Islamic State (IS) group says was killed in a Jordanian air strike was condemned to death by the extremist group last year, according to an American Muslim activist. IS seized aid worker Kayla Mueller in 2013 in northern Syria and initially gave her a "life sentence" in retaliation for the jailing in Texas of a Pakistani woman whose case is a well-known cause among Islamist extremists, said activist Mauri Saalakhan, who leads a US campaign to free the Pakistani. The extremist group said on Friday (Feb 6) that Mueller, a 26-year-old from Prescott, Arizona, was killed when Jordanian fighter jets bombed a building where she was being held. Jordan expressed doubt about the claim and US authorities said they could not confirm it. Mueller's family had long asked US officials, aid groups and media outlets, including Reuters, not to use her name for fear the publicity could induce
