Captain of AirAsia QZ8501 'out of his seat' before plane lost control: Report

SINGAPORE: The captain of AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which crashed into the Java Sea on Dec 28, 2014, had left his seat before the plane lost control, according to Reuters on Saturday (Jan 31). Captain Iriyanto "was out of his seat conducting an unorthodox procedure when his co-pilot apparently lost control, and by the time he returned it was too late to save the plane", two unnamed sources familiar with the investigation told Reuters. On Thursday, the country's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) revealed that the  French co-pilot, Remi Plesel, was flying the plane  when the aircraft went down, rather than Captain Iriyanto, an experienced former fighter pilot. "The second-in-command was the pilot flying," chief investigator Mardjono Siswosuwarno told reporters in Jakarta, adding that the captain was monitoring the flight. The flight was en route from Surabaya to Singapore before it crashed into the sea, killing all 162 people on board. Seventy-two bodie

QZ8501 co-pilot at controls when plane crashed: Investigator

JAKARTA: The co-pilot of an AirAsia flight that crashed into the Java Sea last month was at the controls when it went down, killing all 162 people on board, investigators said Thursday (Jan 29). The announcement came as fishermen found two more bodies from the crash in waters off Sulawesi island in central Indonesia, around 1,000km from where the plane crashed, a search and rescue official said. AirAsia Flight QZ8501 went down in stormy weather on Dec 28 during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. Only 72 bodies have so far been recovered. Indonesian investigators have been analysing data from the plane's black boxes - the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder - and this week submitted a preliminary report to the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization. On Thursday, the country's National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) revealed that the French co-pilot, Remi Plesel, was flying the plane when the

Indonesia suspends dozens of flights for no permits

"Garuda Indonesia has committed four violations, Lion Air has 35 violations, Wings Air has 18 violations, Trans Nusa has one violation, and Susi Air has 3 violations," Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan told a press conference. "They committed violations of their permits. They don't have the flight permits (for the 61 routes). It's the same violation as AirAsia." http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/indonesia-suspends-dozens/1579760.html?cid=NEWSCNSA#.VLCCOnaEizk.mailto

Salute to the Ebola volunteers

LONDON:   A British nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone was in a "critical" condition Sunday, locked in isolation inside a specialist London hospital. Pauline Cafferkey's health has taken a turn for the worse in recent days, the Royal Free Hospital said in a statement. "The condition of Pauline Cafferkey has gradually deteriorated over the past two days and is now critical," the Royal Free Hospital in London said in a statement. On Wednesday, doctors had said the 39-year-old Scot was sitting up in bed, reading and talking to staff from inside her isolation tent in the hospital. They said Cafferkey, who was working with the charity Save the Children in Sierra Leone, had agreed to have blood plasma treatment and take an experimental anti-viral drug. However, they were not able to give her ZMapp, the drug used to cure fellow British volunteer nurse William Pooley, because global supplies had run out. The plasma was taken from the blood of a patient successfu

Lee Chong Wei's suspension

Wonder what will be the outcome? I am hoping the best for Chong Wei. BWF 'Provisionally Suspends' Lee Chong Wei Lee Chong Wei, the world's top badminton player, has been provisionally suspended for allegedly violating antidoping regulations. The Badminton World Federation said Tuesday it imposed the suspension due to an adverse analytical finding of a sample taken from the Malaysian player at the BWF World Championships, the sport's most prestigious tournament, held in Denmark in August. The case against Lee was reported previously, but the BWF and Badminton Association of Malaysia could only officially reveal his name on Tuesday after the imposition of the temporary suspension. Lee has said he has never cheated or used banned substances. BAM Deputy President Norza Zakaria said on Saturday that one of its players had tested positive dexamethasone, which is on
