Is the protest good for Hong Kong?
Hong Kong sees largest increase in risk of business disruption: Analysts
Hong Kong jumped 62 places, from 132nd to 70th, in the Civil Unrest Index (CUI) by risk analytics company Maplecroft - moving it from the 'medium risk' category to 'high risk'. Liberia also saw a significant increase in risk, jumping 39 places from 113th to 74th.
SINGAPORE: Nearly 20 per cent of countries have seen an increase in the risk of business disruption over the last three months, with Hong Kong experiencing the largest increase in risk over the last quarter - according to the Civil Unrest Index (CUI) by risk analytics company Maplecroft.
In a press release issued on Wednesday (Oct 8), Maplecroft said that the ongoing pro-democracy protests in the Chinese-administered territory has seen Hong Kong jump 62 places in the index from 132nd to 70th - moving it from the 'medium risk' category to 'high risk'. While Hong Kong has performed well in the economic, social and rights factors of the CUI, it has performed poorly in democratic governance, added Maplecroft.
"Tracking the trajectory of countries with rising levels of unrest should be a top priority for business continuity planners and risk managers," said Charlotte Ingham, Principal Analyst at Maplecroft. "Civil unrest can create significant risks to operations and supply chains and impact the safety of employees and company property."
A number of other Asian countries are also in the 'high risk' category, with manufacturing hubs like Thailand (16th), Indonesia (23rd), Vietnam (24th), China (26th), India (28th), Cambodia (32nd) and the Philippines (35th), all in the top 50 of the index.
Singapore jumped from 104th to 85th in the index, but remains in the 'medium risk' category, while Malaysia fell two spots from 41st to 43rd. The highest ranked Asian country according to the CUI is Pakistan in 3rd.
Outside of Asia, Liberia also saw a significant increase in risk, jumping 39 places from 113th to 74th. This is mainly due to the unrest caused by the spread of the Ebola virus.
