The most precious gifts of life from you

I feel so touched when reading this piece of news. Personally, I'm so glad to have registered as an organ donor this year and hope when I'm gone one day, at least I still could contribute something to the needy. Kudos to those who have pledged for organ donation. For those who have not, I sincerely urge you to consider this. This could be the most precious gift of life from you.

KUALA LUMPUR: As people were busy counting down to Christmas, the parents of a 17-year-old boy made a generous decision that gave what could be the best present to at least three people.

The boy had been declared brain dead by doctors at Selayang Hospital after a road accident on Dec 20.

The parents' decision set off a chain of events which eventually saw their son's kidneys transplanted to two young patients — a girl and a boy, both 16 — and his liver given to a three-year-old girl.

The operation was carried out at the Selayang Hospital from 9pm to 5am on Christmas Day.

Besides the liver and kidneys, doctors also managed to retrieve his heart valves and bones. Their parents, however, wanted to retain their son's eyes.

National Heart Institute (IJN) heart and lung services clinical director Dr Mohamed Ezani Mohd Taib said there was consent for the heart and lungs to be retrieved.

"However, the organs were found to be not suitable. The lungs were damaged during the accident and we only found that out during the surgery," said Dr Mohamed Ezani, who was one of the surgeons involved in the operation.
He said the planned heart and lung transplant was aborted and the heart valves were retrieved instead.

Unfortunately over at IJN, a 35-year-old lung and heart potential recipient as well as a 27-year-old heart patient from Kuala Terengganu on the waiting list as a standby patient, had to be given the disappointing news.

Consultant cardiologist Datuk Dr David Chew, who was also standing by at IJN to perform the transplant on either of the patients, not only had to forego his Christmas Eve celebrations but had to go home disappointed.

The boy, who was waiting for his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results, was a pillion rider on a motorcycle when the road accident took place at the Middle Ring Road II near Batu Caves.

The boy, from Kampung Laksamana, Batu Caves, was going out for dinner with friends on Dec 20.

After the accident, he was rushed to Selayang Hospital with head and chest injuries and was pronounced brain dead on Dec 24. He was cremated on Christmas Day.

The National Transplant Resources Centre said he was the 39th organ donor this year.
